Demons Go to Church Too

The Other Six Days - Jaxson R. Harlan

The mark of a true Christian is not the box you checked. It is a heart He has changed.

A message for the one who has done all the things and still does not know Him

You already know the question. You have asked it about other people. You may be afraid to ask it about yourself.

How do you know if someone is a true Christian?

Most of us reach for a résumé. I am a good person. I go to church. I believe in God. I can quote the verses. I got in the water. I follow a preacher. I wear the cross. I put the link in the bio. I showed up again this Sunday.

Here is the truth we are going to walk all the way through: none of those things, by themselves, is the mark. A true Christian is not a person who completed the church checklist. A true Christian is a person whose heart has been changed by God from the inside out — and the other six and a half days keep telling on that change.

“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good — except God alone.” Mark 10:18

The Résumé That Does Not Save

Most people start with goodness. I am a good person, they say, as if heaven were a character reference. Jesus already closed that door. No one is good except the Father. If your hope is that you are better than the man two pews over, you do not have hope. You have a ranking.

Others say, I go to church. Good. So did a demon in Mark chapter one. Jesus was teaching in the synagogue when an unclean spirit spoke up from a man sitting in the service. The man was in the room. He was listening to the sermon. The demon still had to be cast out. Church attendance is not regeneration. Demons go to church too.

What about believing that God is real? James is blunt. Even the demons believe — and shudder. Belief that God exists is not the same as belonging to Him. Hell is not an atheist colony. It is full of beings who know exactly who He is and will not bow.

What about reciting Scripture, memorising it, knowing all the key verses? Satan did that to Jesus in the wilderness. Matthew chapter four. He quoted the Book and twisted it toward disobedience. A full head and a rebel heart can live in the same body.

What about following Jesus? Judas followed Jesus. He walked the same roads. He heard the same sermons. He held the same purse. Following the crowd that follows Christ is not the same as being His.

What about using His name — praying loud prayers, talking deliverance, talking healing? The seven sons of Sceva in Acts nineteen tried that. They used the name of Jesus like a tool they had borrowed. The demon answered them: Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you? Then it beat them and sent them out of the house naked. A borrowed name is not a known Lord.

“You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that — and shudder.” James 2:19

The American Dream of the Foyer

Here is the version most of us were handed, whether we grew up under a steeple in Alberta or anywhere else on this continent. Believe. Get baptized. Follow a preacher. Sit in the same seat every week. You are in. That is the North American church dream. It is tidy. It is measurable. It fills a register. It is not the gospel.

Go read Acts chapter eight.

There was a man named Simon. He was a magician by trade. He had spent his life dazzling a city and letting people call his power great. Then Philip came preaching the good news of the kingdom and the name of Jesus Christ. The city believed. The city was baptised. And the text says, without blushing, that Simon himself believed, and that Simon was baptized, and that Simon followed Philip.

Believe. Baptised. Following the preacher. Two for two. That is the whole package we keep selling as the finish line.

Then Peter and John arrived. They prayed that the new believers would receive the Holy Spirit. Simon watched the Spirit given and offered them money for the same power. Peter’s answer was not a membership card. It was a wound.

“May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.” Acts 8:20–23

Simon believed. Simon was baptised. Simon’s heart was still far from God.

That is why works do not save you. People think that because they got in a pool once, or they said a prayer once, or they darken a doorway every Sunday, the matter is settled. In reality the Sunday hour is not the evidence. The other six and a half days are.

You Do Not Go to Church to Become One

You do not go to church to be a Christian. You go to church to sit with other Christians for an hour, to hear the Word, to remember the Table, to be sent. Then you walk back into the gravel and the kitchen and the job site and the school pickup, and that is where the world finds out whether anything actually happened to you.

A true Christian has been made a new creation. Not improved. Made new. The old words start dying in the mouth. The old songs lose their pull. The old hungers look like chains instead of treats. People who have known you a long time start asking what is different — how you treated the waitress, how you parent the children, how you speak to your spouse when no one from church is watching.

And the only honest answer is not a speech about your discipline. It is this: I have not done a thing. God did this in me and through me. I am new because of Him.

If the story of your change always points back to you — look what I have built, look how I cleaned myself up, look at my streak — that is not Christianity. That is self-inflicted religion. Jesus said at the gate that no one is good enough. Only God.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Why So Many Walk Away

This is why a great many people want nothing to do with the name Christian. They have watched men and women with crosses around their necks and verses in their captions talk a big game on Sunday and live a wretched one the rest of the week. They have been spoken to like dirt by someone who just took communion. They have watched the foyer smile and the parking-lot rage. They are not rejecting Christ so much as they are rejecting a costume.

I am not giving the scoffer a pass. Some people use hypocrites as an excuse because they do not want a Lord. But the Church does not get to shrug. Jesus already warned us that many will say to Him, Lord, Lord, and He will say He never knew them — even some who prophesied and drove out demons and did mighty works in His name. The issue was never the volume of the ministry. The issue was whether He knew them.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” Matthew 7:21–23

The Mark Is a Changed Heart

The mark of a true Christian is a changed heart. Not a perfect heart. A new one. God creates it. Then the life starts acting out what He put in.

That is where the fruit of the Spirit comes from. You cannot decide on Tuesday morning to manufacture patience. You cannot grit your teeth into peace. You cannot white-knuckle your way into self-control and call it holiness. The fruit is not a self-improvement plan. The fruit is evidence. It is what grows when the Spirit is actually in a person — conduct you could not have produced on your own, love you did not have the raw material for, a gentleness that used to be foreign to your mouth.

It works from the inside out. Always. Outside-in religion can copy the Sunday hour. It cannot copy the kitchen at 10:40 at night.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22–23

If Nothing Inward Has Become Outward

If you are reading this and you have never known that kind of change — if you got in a pool once, you sit in a service, you listen to the pastor, you checked every box you were handed, you think you know Jesus, and yet nothing inward has become outward — then do not soothe yourself with the register.

Pray again. Not a performance prayer. Not a transaction. Pray to see His face. Pray to know Him. Pray for a relationship with Him, not merely a list of things you do for Him or a list of things you want Him to do for you.

Simon’s problem was not that he had missed the altar call. It was that his heart wanted the power and not the Person. A great deal of modern church life is Simon with better lighting. We want the gift. We want the covering. We want the identity. We do not want to be told our heart is not right.

Ask Him to make it right. Ask Him to create in you a clean heart and a new self. That is a prayer He loves to answer, because it is the prayer that stops using Him and starts wanting Him.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26

The Only One That Matters

When He does that work, you will not need to advertise a costume. You will walk into the world able to say, without theatre, that you have been changed by the only One who can do it.

Not because you were good. You were not.
Not because you never missed a Sunday. Demons have made it to more services than some saints.
Not because you believed He was real. The pit already knows He is real.
Because He knew you. Because He made you new. Because the other six and a half days started telling a different story than the one you used to live, and you know you did not write it.

That is the mark.

If you have been hiding behind the boxes, put them down. The boxes were never the door. He is.

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3

The Music “The Other Six Days” – The Lyrics

The Other Six Days

VERSE 1

I learned the handshake in the foyer
Knew the hymn before the key
Got a Bible with my name in gold
And a seat they saved for me
I could quote Him in the wilderness
I could bow my head on cue
I called the water a finish lineAnd the preacher said I was through

VERSE 2

Judas walked the same dust road
Demons sat through the song
Simon believed and Simon went under
And his heart was still wrong
I used His name like a borrowed tool
Talked power I never knew
Hell already believes He’s real
That was never going to do

CHORUS

It ain’t the box I checked
It ain’t the Sunday clothes
It ain’t the verse I weaponised
When I wanted to look like gold
You don’t get made new in an hour
Then go home the same
If He’s been in me at all
The other six days will say His name

VERSE 3

The waitress caught the difference
Long before the church did
Kids know the weather in a house
When the smile is only lid
I pointed every story back to me
Look what I cleaned up
That’s just religion with a better coat
That ain’t a cup He filled up

CHORUS

It ain’t the box I checked
It ain’t the Sunday clothes
It ain’t the verse I weaponised
When I wanted to look like gold
You don’t get made new in an hour
Then go home the same
If He’s been in me at all
The other six days will say His name

BRIDGE

Create in me a clean heart —
Not a cleaner show
I don’t need another checklist
I need to know You know
Not a job I do for heaven
Not a favour I can earn
If nothing inward has come outward
I have not yet learned

FINAL CHORUS

It ain’t the box I checked
It ain’t the Sunday clothes
It ain’t the verse I weaponised
When I wanted to look like gold
You don’t get made new in an hour
Then go home the same
If He’s been in me at all —
The other six days will say His name

TAG (almost spoken)

The boxes were never the door.
He is.
Pray again for His face
Let the other six days tell the truth.
