The West Is Not the Bride

The West Is Not The Bride - Jaxson Harlan Ministry

Christianity is not a flag you hoist so a civilization can survive. It is a Person you kneel to so a sinner can live.

A word for the one who is tired of watching children be confused and neighbours be murdered — and for the one who is being offered a smaller gospel in exchange for that fear.

A meme has been moving through Facebook this week. Enough of you have sent it that it needs an answer from the church, not another share. I am not going to reprint the image here. The photographs are doing a job that words can name without putting them back in front of a child who may be reading over your shoulder.

Here is what it shows, plainly.

The frame is split. On the left is a drag performer — white face paint, a darkened mouth, a crown of horns, a rainbow arched behind the head — holding a children’s picture book as if the library hour were a pulpit. The book is the kind you would find in a story-time stack. The costume is not. On the right is a militant in a black balaclava and a green Izz ad-Din al-Qassam headband, rifle across his chest, tactical vest, the look of Hamas rather than a metaphor. Underneath those two pictures sits a quotation attributed to Stephen Powell: if we do not return to our Christian identity in the West, we will keep being conquered; only Christianity can unite us and help us overcome the existential spiritual and physical threats we are facing.

That pairing is why it travels. It takes two real fears — the unmaking of a child, and murder dressed as holiness — and it staples them to one civilizational slogan. The pictures want you to feel conquered. The sentence wants you to reach for a flag and call the flag a revival.

This word is an answer to that meme. Not a reprint of it.

Some of that sentence is true. Some of it is a different gospel wearing a familiar coat.

I am not going to baptise the left picture. I am not going to soften the right one. I am also not going to let “Christian identity in the West” become a third idol sitting between those two frames.

Tell the Truth About Both Pictures

The left picture is not “kindness.” It is not “inclusion.” It is a public catechism. A child is being taught that the body God made is optional, that desire is lord, and that anyone who says otherwise is the danger in the room. Scripture does not shrug at that.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

If anyone causes one of these little ones — those who believe in me — to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Matthew 18:6

A parent who will not protect a child from that catechism is not being gracious. They are being absent. The church that will not say male and female because the room has gone quiet is not being missional. It is being discipled by the age.

The right picture is not a metaphor. Hamas is not a mood. The green band is the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. That ideology blesses the murder of civilians, hides behind the innocent, and calls the slaughter of image-bearers holy. You do not have to hate a people to name a creed that kills. You have to love the truth.

You shall not murder. Exodus 20:13

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness. Isaiah 5:20

If your Christianity cannot say those two sentences without clearing its throat, it is not Christianity. It is manners.

Do not flatten the pictures into each other. Confusion about the created body and a theology of slaughter are not the same sin. One unmakes a child. The other unmakes a village. Lumping them trains the eye to hate categories of people instead of naming particular evils. That is a cheap trick. The devil likes cheap tricks. He also likes it when the church refuses to name either one.

What the Slogan Gets Right

Powell is not inventing the weather. A people who forget God do go soft. They lose the nerve to call a boy a boy. They lose the nerve to call murder murder. They keep the language of rights and lose the grammar of righteousness. Romans 1 is not a culture-war pamphlet. It is a diagnosis. When a society exchanges the truth of God for a lie, worship does not disappear. It migrates. The body becomes a costume. Power becomes a sacrament. Children become a canvas. Violence finds a sermon.

Christian faith did mark the public life of much of the West for centuries — hospitals, literacy, the idea that the weak have worth because they bear an image no army issued them. That is history, not nostalgia. Tom Holland can write it. A farmer in Alberta can feel it. You do not have to pretend the soil you stand on was neutral.

And yes: a civilization that will not reproduce, will not tell the truth about sex, and will not restrain those who mean it harm, will be replaced by people who will. Neutrality is not a third way. It is a vacancy. Something always moves into a vacancy.

The magistrate is not baptised by pretending otherwise. Romans 13 still exists. The sword is not the Gospel. It is also not optional. A government that will not protect children or punish those who butcher the innocent is not being humble. It is abandoning the job God gave it.

What the Slogan Gets Wrong

Here is the turn, and it is the whole sermon.

Christianity is not “our identity in the West.” Christianity is Christ. He is a Galilean Jew, crucified under Rome, risen, seated, coming again. The church He bought is from every tribe and language and people and nation. If your gospel needs a particular hemisphere to stay in charge in order to remain true, you do not have the Gospel. You have a map.

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. Revelation 7:9

My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place. John 18:36

“Return to our Christian identity” can mean two very different repentances.

One of them is holy: return to Christ. Confess that we have loved our appetites more than His law. Confess that we have outsourced our children to the age. Confess that we have treated the nations as either mascots or monsters. Receive a new heart. That is revival. That is the old path.

The other one is a counterfeit: return to a majority culture that still needed the cross the first time. Put a cross on the flag. Recover the hymns and the holidays and the feeling that this land is ours by sacrament. Use Jesus as the glue that holds a nervous civilization together. That is not revival. That is borrowed glory. We have already preached that sermon about parents who live through a child’s trophy. A nation can do the same thing with a Saviour.

Christendom had cathedrals. It also had pews full of unregenerate men. It had hospitals. It also had crusades and slave ships and quiet respectable sin that never made the pamphlet. “The West was Christian” is too large a sentence. Parts of it were baptised. Parts of it were only wet.

Only Christianity can unite us, the quote says. Only Christ unites His people. That is a smaller sentence and a larger hope. He does not unite “the West” as a bloc against the rest of the earth. He makes one new humanity out of Jew and Gentile, Albertan and Palestinian, the man who used to mock and the woman who used to hide. If your unity requires an enemy photograph to stay in frame, it is not the unity of Ephesians 2. It is a coalition.

We Do Not Wrestle Against Flesh and Blood

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

That verse is not permission to go soft on Hamas. It is a prohibition against making a man in a keffiyeh — or a man in makeup — into the devil himself, so you can feel righteous for hating a face.

The powers behind both pictures are older than either costume. One spirit says, You shall be as God; rewrite the body. Another says, Kill for God; rewrite the neighbour. The flesh wants a simpler war than that. The flesh wants a target it can photograph. The Spirit wants a church that can tell the truth and still pray for the man in the photograph, because he is not beyond the blood that bought us.

Jesus did not look at Rome and say, Return to Israelite identity or you will be conquered. Israel had the identity. Israel had the Temple. Israel still needed a Lamb. The first-century church did not out-vote Nero. It out-loved the grave. Some of them died. The Gospel still ran.

That is not quietism. Protect the child. Tell the school board no. Tell the magistrate to do his job. Support the people who are actually under the knife — including the church in places where the green band is not a meme. Do it as stewards, not as a people who have forgotten we are exiles.

Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 1 Peter 2:11–12

The First Conquest to Fear

The West can be lost as a cultural project. That is not a small thing if you love your grandchildren. Say it plainly.

The church can be lost as a witness while the flags are still flying. That is a worse thing. Demons go to church too. We already said that. A baptised civilization with an unchanged heart is not a defence against the left picture or the right one. It is a larger room for both.

If “Christian identity” means we recover the name without recovering the cross, we will baptise our fear and call it discernment. We will treat the nations as a siege and the Gospel as a wall. We will forget that we were the threat once — rebels, idolaters, people who needed to be conquered by mercy.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

The only conquest the New Testament celebrates is the one that happened to you. Sin lost a slave. Death lost a mouth. A man got a new name. That is how the church takes ground. Not by making Jesus the mascot of a nervous West. By making sinners into saints, one repentance at a time, in every language the curse ever split.

What You Do With This

If you have been using Powell’s sentence as a permission slip to hate a face, put it down. Name the sin. Do not baptise the sinner as the devil. Pray for the man in the band and the man in the paint as if the blood were enough for both, because it is.

If you have been using “the Gospel is for every nation” as a permission slip to stay quiet while children are catechised in a lie, put that down too. Love is not mute. Parents, the child in your house is not a public talking point. Teach them their body is a gift. Keep the screens honest. Do not outsource formation to a library hour you would not sit through yourself.

If you hold office, or vote for those who do, do not confuse Pentecost with police work. The sword can restrain Hamas. The sword cannot raise the dead. Demand the first. Preach the second. Do not ask a premier to do what only the Spirit does, and do not ask the Spirit to excuse what a premier refuses to restrain.

If you are angry because the world looks like those two photographs, good. Anger that will not lie is a start. Do not let it become your god. Take it to the Lord who already sees. He is not surprised by the rainbow or the rifle. He was on a hill outside the city when both kinds of darkness were already old.

And if you have never come to Christ at all — if “Christian identity” is the family weather and not a new heart — start there. The West cannot save you. A better decade cannot save you. A stronger tribe cannot save you. The Bridegroom can.

The West is not the bride.

The church is. She is not white or Western or winning. She is blood-bought, multi-tongued, often poor, often slandered, and she belongs to a Man who already conquered the only enemy that gets the last word.

Return to Him. Not to a mood. Not to a map. To Him.

Then tell the truth in public. Protect the little ones. Refuse the cheap photograph. Keep the Gospel larger than your fear.

The Music “The West Is Not The Bride” – The Lyrics

The West Is Not The Bride

VERSE 1
They put a costume on a story hour
Called it love and let it in
They put a banner on a massacre
And called the murder holy then
The feed will sell you both of them
As if they were the same
Fear will make a gospel out of
Anybody you can blame

CHORUS
The West is not the bride
A flag is not a Name
You don’t get born again
By winning back a frame
Return to Him, not to a map
Not to a frightened tribe
He already bought a people —
The West is not the bride

VERSE 2
They said return to who we were
Put the cross back on the cloth
Use His name to hold the border
Call the old days good enough
I know the ground I stand on
Was marked by church and hymn
But a baptised country with an unchanged heart
Is just a larger room for sin

CHORUS
The West is not the bride
A flag is not a Name
You don’t get born again
By winning back a frame
Return to Him, not to a map
Not to a frightened tribe
He already bought a people —
The West is not the bride

VERSE 3
He is a carpenter from Galilee
Not a western brand
He bought a people every colour
Every language, every land
Hold the child. Tell the truth.
Let the magistrate do right
But don’t you make a Saviour
Into a mascot for a fight

BRIDGE
We do not wrestle flesh and blood
Though blood still hits the ground
The sword can stay a killer
It cannot make a dead man found
Conquered by mercy first —
That’s the only war He wins
If I only love my hemisphere
I have not met Him yet

TAG
Not to a mood.
Not to a map.
To Him.
