Not by Mood

Not By Mood - Jaxson Harlan Ministry

A feeling is not a covenant.

A word for the husband or wife waiting to feel like staying — and for anyone who learned that love is weather.

I know this house when the lamps are low.

That is where a marriage actually lives. Not in the photograph from the day you said the words. Not in the week you could not keep your hands off each other. In the room after the guests have gone home, when the lamps are turned down and nobody is performing. You came back to speak with the vow again. Not because the spark was loud. Because the yes still stands.

A lot of people were never taught that sentence. They were taught a kinder story. Love is what you feel. When the feeling thins, the promise thins with it. Honesty becomes optional if the mood is still pretty. Fidelity becomes a mood you wait for. Leaving wears a softer name — growth, self-care, we drifted, I need to find myself. The market of easy hearts will sell you all of that with a straight face.

Scripture does not sell that. Scripture treats marriage as something God joins, not something a feeling maintains.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24

“So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” – Matthew 19:6

Hold fast is not a weather report. Joined is not a temperature. If the Lord joined two people, the joining does not rise and fall with the weather in the chest. That is the sanity of marriage. Not by mood.

The market of easy hearts

Walk through the culture for ten minutes and you will hear the new names for an old theft.

Desire is treated as a claim. If I want it, it must be mine. If I no longer want what I promised, the promise was a misunderstanding. Advice comes cheap from a glowing glass. The glass does not know your house. It does not know the person asleep down the hall. It knows how to take a restlessness and baptise it as honesty.

Hear the difference. Honesty in a covenant is telling the truth inside the house. The glowing glass often means telling a prettier story outside it. One of those things will save a marriage. The other will spend it.

Leaving has learned kinder clothes. Nobody has to rent a room to walk out anymore. You can stay under the same roof and move your heart to another address. You can keep the ring on and give the tenderness to a screen. We have already said that in another word. Infidelity learned a quieter door. This word is the other side of that door. It is what the house is for, if anyone is still willing to live in it.

People who said the word and ran

Under an honest sun you can see the crowd. They are not all villains. Some of them said the words in a real church and meant them that afternoon. Then the afternoon ended.

People promising without a spine. People hearing vows they would not stand. People writing love they would not keep — and calling it love.

That last line is the one that should slow us down. The word love can be printed on anything. It can be printed on a feeling that will not tell the truth. It can be printed on a leaving that does not want to use the old ugly nouns. It can be printed on a marriage that still takes pictures and no longer keeps watch.

Do not sneer at warmth. Attraction inside a covenant is a gift. Desire for the person you promised is not the enemy. The enemy is the crown. When a feeling is treated as the registrar — when the spark is allowed to decide whether the vow is still in force — the house is already for sale. You can still be sleeping in it.

“The Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.” – Malachi 2:14

Companion of your youth. Wife by covenant. Not wife by weather. Not companion of your best season. The prophet does not ask how the husband felt that week. He asks what the man did with a woman God still calls his.

A quiet lie will take the room

Most houses are not lost in one loud night. They are lost in a sentence nobody corrects.

I will tell her later. He does not need to know that. It is only a thought. We are fine. Fine is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Fine is often the sound a quiet lie makes when it has learned the floorboards.

Honesty is not a personality type. It is a lamp you refuse to turn off. Fidelity is not a mood that visits when the week is easy. It is a door that does not get a second name.

If you have been waiting to feel like telling the truth, you have already handed the room to the lie. Feelings follow what you feed. If you feed the secret, the secret will feel like the only honest place in the house. If you feed the vow — out loud, in the light, to the person you promised — the feeling may come late. It may come thin. It may take months. The vow does not wait for it.

“Let marriage be held in honour among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” – Hebrews 13:4

Honour is not a mood either. Honour is how you speak about the person when they are not in the room. Honour is what you do with your eyes. Honour is whether the bed stays a covenant or becomes a convenience. The writer of Hebrews does not say, hold marriage in honour when you feel fond. He says among all.

Two are one by Him

There is a sign over the door of a Christian marriage, and it is older than the town you live in. It does not flash. It does not ask how the weekend went.

The two are one by Him. That is the vow. Not by mood.

Paul does not start with the husband’s appetite. He starts with Christ’s.

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” – Ephesians 5:25

Christ did not wait to feel like a bridegroom on Friday afternoon. He gave Himself up. The feeling in Gethsemane was not romance. It was obedience with blood in the mouth. If that is the pattern hung over a Christian house, then a dry week is not permission to leave, and a warm week is not the proof that you may stay.

Wives are not off the hook because this sentence names husbands first. The whole chapter is a people learning how to live under a Lord who did not abandon His own. Fidelity is not a male sport. Honesty is not a female assignment. Both of you were joined. Both of you can starve the house with a quiet lie. Both of you can keep it with a plain word.

If your house is already cold, hear this without being flattered and without being crushed. The Cross is large enough for a marriage that has been running on fumes. Coming clean is how a house starts again. Waiting to feel like coming clean is how the quiet lie finishes the room.

Come back to the table

You do not need a better spark before you tell the truth. You need the truth, and then you need the Lord who joined you.

Sit down. Lamps low is fine. Turn the glass face-down. Say the thing you have been carrying. Name the door you opened. Name the door you want shut. Ask Him to make a clean heart where a secret used to live. Ask the person across from you to stay in the room while the sentence lands.

Some words fall soft and disappear. Some take root. The difference is rarely talent. The difference is whether anyone is still willing to stand where they said they would stand when the feeling was loud.

Not the spark you made. Not the story you prefer. The yes He joined. The truth you honour.

Not by mood.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” – Psalm 51:10

A steadfast spirit is the opposite of a crowned feeling. Ask for that. He knows how to give it. He has been keeping covenant with an unfaithful people longer than your house has been standing.

Not By Mood (Featuring Treasured Heart)

Artist: Treasured Heart

Verse 1
I know this house when the lamps are low
I came to speak with you again
A vow was sown in ordinary light
While both of us were still learning
And the yes that took up residence
Still stands
Not by mood

Verse 2
I walked the market of easy hearts
Where leaving wears a kinder name
Advice came cheap from a glowing glass
That called desire the same as claim
Then a truer light cut through the noise
And told the truth
Not by mood

Verse 3
Under an honest sun I saw
A crowd that said the word and ran
People promising without a spine
People hearing vows they would not stand
People writing love they would not keep
And called it love
Not by mood

Verse 4
Friends, I said, you do not see
A quiet lie will take the room
Hear the word that first joined two
Take the hand you said was home
Some words fell soft and disappeared
Some took root
Not by mood

Verse 5
And many bowed and called it love
A feeling they had learned to crown
But a sign still burned above the door
In language older than the town
It said the two are one by Him
That is the vow
Not by mood
