Sanctuary Is Not Silence

Sanctuary Is Not Silence - Jaxson Harlan Ministry

A church can be a refuge without becoming a room where the truth is not allowed to speak. Neutrality is sometimes wisdom. Sometimes it is just fear with better lighting.

A word for the one who keeps the peace by going quiet, and the one who thinks volume is the same thing as courage.

There is a sentence travelling through the culture this week. You have heard a version of it if you have been online for ten minutes. A public man is asked to name a wound that would cost him the room. He says the room is a sanctuary. He says he does not take sides. Half the internet calls it holiness. The other half calls it a spine that never showed up.

I am not going to put his name on this page. I am not going to put the maps on this page either. If I do, you will stop reading a sermon and start keeping score. That is how the age works. It hands you two wars, two children, two approved laments, and then it measures your soul by which one you posted.

This word is about the room. The church foyer. The family table. The stage. The radio. The Group chat that used to be a friendship. The places we have learned to call safe because nobody is bleeding out loud in them.

A sanctuary is a real gift. Silence is sometimes obedience. And some of what we are calling sanctuary is just the fear of man wearing Sunday clothes.

What a Sanctuary Is For

The house of God is not a rally. It is not a press conference. It is not a place where every grief in the world is required to take a number and speak for three minutes before the offering.

People come in carrying what will not fit in a caption. A marriage that is dying in the truck on the way home. A son who will not come to the table. A diagnosis. A habit they still will not name. They need a room where Christ is larger than the feed. That room is holy. Protecting it is not cowardice.

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18

Paul does not say peace is optional. He also does not say peace is the same as pretending. “As far as it depends on you” is a boundary and a duty at once. You are not required to set the whole earth right from the pulpit. You are required not to lie in order to keep the coffee warm.

Jesus told the truth and still left room at the table for tax collectors and zealots who would have killed each other in the street. The presence of both men in the same company was not a statement that their causes were equal. It was a statement that the King was bigger than their knives.

What Silence Is Doing When It Is Not Holy

There is another kind of quiet. It has a respectable voice. It says, I do not take sides. It says, we do not talk politics here. It says, this is not the hill. It says, think of the children in the third row.

Sometimes those sentences are love. Sometimes they are a man counting the cost of the room and deciding the wounded can wait outside.

“Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?” Proverbs 24:11–12

The proverb does not ask whether the dying person is popular in your county. It does not ask whether naming them would thin the offering. It asks whether you knew, and whether the God who weighs the heart watched you look away.

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” James 4:17

That verse will not let you hide inside temperament. Some of us are quiet because we are gentle. Some of us are quiet because we have learned which sentences get us invited back. Those are not the same spirit. One is the fruit of the Spirit. The other is the fear of man, and Scripture calls that a snare.

Watch how the snare works. You will weep, in public, for the wound that costs you nothing in this town. You will go still as stone for the wound that would split the supper table. You will have a war you will preach and a war you will only pray about in the truck. You will have a child you will defend at the school-board mic and a child far from here whose name never makes it into the pastoral prayer. The pattern is older than the internet. The internet only made it loud.

I am not telling you which map to hang. I am telling you that a heart that only laments the approved grief is not a peacemaker. It is a member of a tribe that has learned to cry on cue.

Peacemaking Is Not People-Pleasing

Blessed are the peacemakers. Not blessed are the ones who kept every stakeholder comfortable. A peacemaker tells the truth in a voice that still wants the other person alive. A people-pleaser tells whatever version of the truth will leave the room intact.

Jesus stood in front of Pilate and did not campaign. He also did not call the trial a misunderstanding.

“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” John 18:37

He testified. He did not take Caesar’s chair. He did not take the Zealot’s dagger. He took a cross. That is not neutrality. That is a third way that judges both of the first two.

This is why this word belongs beside The West Is Not the Bride and Come Across the Aisle. The Bride is not a faction. Crossing the aisle is not pretending the crime did not happen. Sanctuary is not a gag order issued in the name of Jesus.

You can refuse to turn the Sunday hour into a foreign-policy briefing and still refuse to baptise a lie. You can refuse to let a celebrity fight set the text and still admit that some silences are purchased. You can love the people in the room who disagree with you and still say, out loud, that a body is a body, that a child is a child, that murder is murder, that pride is pride, whether the proud man votes with you or not.

The Two Rooms We Keep Confusing

There is the room where the Word is opened and the supper is given. That room has a job: to name Jesus, to feed His people, to bind up the ones who walked in already bleeding, to send them back into the week with a spine.

Then there is the rest of the week. The shop. The feed. The school. The ballot. The conversation at the fence. That room has a job too: to tell the truth as far as it depends on you, and to bear the cost when the truth is not free.

We have been collapsing those rooms. Some want the sanctuary to sound like a rally so they can feel brave without going home and loving an actual neighbour. Some want the week to sound like the sanctuary so they never have to risk a friendship. Both are a kind of hiding.

If you preach, do not use the pulpit to draft other men’s sons into a war you will not name at your own table. If you sit in the pew, do not require the preacher to perform your politics before you will believe he fears God. If you hold a microphone anywhere else — a stage, a stream, a supper — do not call the fear of losing the booking “pastoral wisdom” if what you mean is that you liked the lights.

And if you are the one who cannot stop talking: volume is not the same thing as courage either. A man can shout about a distant evil to avoid the confession sitting in his own truck. Sanctuary is not silence. A megaphone is not holiness.

What to Do With the Quiet

Start closer than the map.

Ask the Lord which silence in you is gentleness and which one is a snare. He already knows. El Roi does not need the headline to see the child, the widow, the man you will not confront, the sentence you swallowed because the room got tight.

If you have used “we do not take sides” to keep from taking the Lord’s side — against your own pride, against the harm in your house, against the fashionable lie your friends require — repent of that. Not of being careful. Of being owned.

If you have used other people’s wars as a proof that you are awake, put that down too. Lament is not a brand. The widow does not need your positioning. She needs bread, and a church that will still be there when the trend moves on.

Live at peace as far as it depends on you. Rescue those being led away as far as it is in your hand. Tell the truth in the room you actually stand in. Do not outsource your courage to a caption. Do not outsource your mercy to a cause.

The sanctuary is for sinners who need a place to kneel. It is not a place to hide from the God who already sees what you would not say.

Come in. Bring the thing you would not name. He is not afraid of it. He was not silent when it would have kept Him safe. He opened His mouth, and then He opened His hands, and the only side He took was the side of the guilty who would come.

The Music “Sanctuary Is Not Silence” – The Lyrics

Sanctuary Is Not Silence

Artist: Jaxson R. Harlan

VERSE 1
I kept the peace like a good son
Left the hard word in the truck
Said the house was built for mercy
Said the quiet was enough
But a man can call it shelter
When he’s hiding from the cost
And a room that never bleeds out loud
Can still be a place that’s lost

VERSE 2
I had a grief I knew the words for
It would never split the pew
Had another I would pray about
If the weather ever blew
I could weep when it was easy
Go stone-still when it got near
Told myself I was a peacemaker
I was only buying years

CHORUS
Sanctuary is not silence
A refuge ain’t a lock
You can hold a hurting neighbour
And still refuse the fog
Peace is not the same as pleasing
Truth can sit and not throw stones
But if I will not say what He sees
I have made a quieter throne

VERSE 3
There are hills that are not Calvary
I was not told to die on those
There are children in the third row
Who need a gospel, not a pose
I will not turn the table
Into somebody’s campaign
But I will not call it holy
If the Lamb would not stay tame

CHORUS
Sanctuary is not silence
A refuge ain’t a lock
You can hold a hurting neighbour
And still refuse the fog
Peace is not the same as pleasing
Truth can sit and not throw stones
But if I will not say what He sees
I have made a quieter throne

BRIDGE
He did not take Caesar’s chair
He did not take the knife
He opened up His mouth for truth
Then opened up His life
The only side that saves a man
Is the side that wore the blame
So come in if you’re bleeding
Don’t you use His house to hide a name

FINAL CHORUS
Sanctuary is not silence
The door is still a door
Bring the sentence you were swallowing
Lay it down there on the floor
He already took the costly side
The one that kept Him poor
If He’s been in me at all —
I cannot love the lock more

TAG
I don’t take sides, I used to say
Like that sentence made me clean
Then I heard Him in the quiet seat
Asking what the quiet means
