Still Bearing His Image: The Fracture We Inherited and the Grace That Calls Us Home

Still Bearing His Image

We were never meant to feel this far from home

Every one of us carries a quiet ache we cannot quite name. It shows up in the restlessness that no promotion, no relationship, no new city, and no late-night scroll can silence. It is the sense that something sacred was lost long before we arrived, and we have been trying to find our way back ever since.

That ache is not random. It is the echo of a story that began in glory, broke in disobedience, and can only be healed by grace.

We Were Fashioned to Reflect the King

Before there was any of this brokenness, there was a garden and a God who delighted in what He had made. He did not create humanity as an afterthought. He shaped us to carry His own likeness. Scripture tells us, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).

We were designed to walk with Him without shame, to love, to create, to rule and tend the world as His representatives. That image is still in us. You can see it in a father’s fierce protection, a mother’s midnight sacrifice, an artist’s need to make something beautiful, a stranger’s unexpected kindness. We were made for more than survival. We were made to know God and to reflect Him.

Yet something went terribly wrong.

The Inheritance We Never Asked For

One act of distrust. One decision to believe we knew better than the One who formed us. And the world cracked. Physical death entered. Worse, spiritual death — that deep, living separation from the life of God — became the inheritance of every person born after.

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). We do not have to teach a child to be selfish. We do not have to instruct anyone how to hide, to blame, or to chase after things that cannot satisfy. The sinful nature is already there.

We are born “darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart” (Ephesians 4:18). The wages of that sin is death — not only the grave that waits for every body, but the walking death of a soul cut off from its Source: “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Look at the modern world and you see the evidence everywhere. We have more connection than any generation before us and more loneliness. We have more knowledge and more confusion. We chase identity, success, pleasure, and control, yet the emptiness remains. The fracture is not just “out there.” It runs through every human heart, including yours and mine.

The Only Way Back Is the Way We Could Never Build

We cannot climb our way home. No amount of good intentions, religious effort, or self-improvement can repair what was broken in the garden. The distance is too great. The debt is too real.

But God did not leave us in the dark. He put forward His Son as the atoning sacrifice. “Whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith” (Romans 3:25). Jesus took the death we earned. His blood did what our striving never could: it satisfied the justice of God and opened the way for us to be brought back into the life we lost.

This is grace. Not a second chance we somehow deserve, but an undeserved rescue we can only receive. We do not draw near to God by proving we are worthy. We draw near by admitting we are not, and by trusting the finished work of Christ.

The image that was marred can be restored. The life of God that was cut off can flow again. Every person — no matter how far they have wandered, how many times they have failed, how deeply they feel the separation — can come home. Not by their own strength, but by the same grace that first formed us from the dust.

The King who made you still wants you. The fracture does not have the last word. Grace does.

Still Bearing His Image

Verse 1 (Jaxson)
I was shaped from the dust with His breath in my chest
Made to walk in the garden, made to wear His rest
But I reached for the knowledge I was never meant to own
And the ground that once knew me turned hard as a stone
Now the wages keep coming, they follow me still
Physical death in the body, a silence in the will

Verse 2 (Savannah)
Every child comes crying with the fracture already there
No one has to teach us how to hide or how to stare
We are born with the hunger that the garden couldn’t fill
Alienated from the life of God, yet we carry Him still
There’s a likeness in the ashes the darkness couldn’t take
A spark that keeps flickering no matter how we break

Chorus (Together)
We were made in His image, we were made for His light
But we chose the long shadow, we chose the long night
The inheritance we carry is older than our name
Only the blood of Jesus can cover all the shame
Grace didn’t wait for us to climb our way back home
He came down through the thorns and He called us His own

Verse 3 (Jaxson)
I’ve walked these modern streets with the same old empty ache
Tried to fill what was missing with everything I could take
(Savannah) I’ve seen the same old story in a thousand different faces
The ones who built their kingdoms and the ones who lost their places
(Together) We cannot earn the distance that was opened by the fall
The only door that’s open is the one He tore through all

Bridge (Savannah, then both)
You don’t have to be worthy
You don’t have to be clean
The atoning work is finished
On a hill we’ve never seen
Just come with the dust still on you
Just come with the night still on you
The King who formed you from the clay
Is the same One calling you today

Final Chorus (Together, building)
We were made in His image, we were made for His light
But we chose the long shadow, we chose the long night
The inheritance we carry is older than our name
Only the blood of Jesus can cover all the shame
Grace didn’t wait for us to climb our way back home
He came down through the thorns
He came down through the thorns
And He called us His own

(soft tag) Still bearing His image… Even here in the dust.
